Banker appears in court over wife’s murder (by Ben Van Laere)

Neil Ellerbeck, aged 45, is accused of murdering his wife Katerine at their house in north London. Ellerbeck was a city banker. He worked for HSBC Asset Management as a global chief investment officer. The police found the dead body of Katerine on Friday, the 14th of November. The cause of death is strangulation.

The couple had been married for 14 years and they have 2 children. It was a wealthy family with a nice house. Katerine was a housewife and looked after the children when Neil went to work.

The neighbors can’t believe this drama. “It was a happy family, we thought. We never saw them fighting or something. Neil was a bit shy but a very friendly man.”

There were still no cases like this on this blog but I guess cases like this, where a husband kills his wife or vice versa are the most common murder-cases in every country. When you watch the news you often see that a family drama has taken place. I can’t understand such family dramas. How can you murder the person you loved for so long? How can you kill the mother or father of your children? I think such murderers never loved their partner. You can always divorce when you have very serious problems in your relation. But killing your husband and destroying the life of your children is the cruelest action you can make.

This is really a family tragedy. Because Neil Ellerbeck (probably) killed his wife, at the same time he lost his two children. Although they might be young, if they realise that their father killed their mother, who they loved, they probably don’t want to see him anymore. On the other hand, in case Neil has been convicted for murder, he will be confined in prison. All the attention goes to the pour victim Katerine, but what will happen with the other victims, the children, who lost their parents almost in one day? Maybe they can stay with family; otherwise they will probably go to a foster house.
Like Ben wrote, these crimes happen every week, but each one of them destroys many lives.

In all those similar family tragedies, people mostly can’t foresee such a drama. Rows are kept inside the house: it’s like a secret of the family. It’s all glamour to the outside world: a “perfect family” with a large income and two children.
I think these crimes are the result of the fact that these families in trouble don’t search for help of professionals or other people. This results, according to me, in black and white visions, because you never hear different opinions. I wonder why these people don’t search for help. Many organisations exist to try to work it out.

I agree with Ben for the most parts of his opinion. I also find it very weird that somebody could murder a family member, especially when a mother or a father killed their own children. I really don’t understand that and I think that we never will understand what drove a person so far that he would do this cruel action.
In this situation killed a man his wife. I’m not agree with Ben when he said that the man never loved his woman. I don’t think that we can declare. The people you love the most are also the people who can hurt you the most. Like they always say: love and hate are lying close.
I agree with the fact that you can always divorce especially now these days and also because the law has made it more easy to divorce. But it’s a bit easy to give that as a the only solution. There are so many facts that we have to be taking into account.
The last thing I want to say is that I also hope that the children will get a good guidance. But the father has already destroyed their lives….
